As the need to preserve our limited supply of fossil fuels increases, people have begun to think of alternative ways of obtaining energy. Photovoltaic cells have a lot of potential in this area, since they don't require as much equipment as solar thermal.
| Solar powered cars have photovoltaic cells located on the surface of the vehicle. The cells capture sunlight and convert it into electricity. The electricity runs a special kind of motor. The average speed for these cars is about 37 miles per hour. They are mostly in experimental stage. Many colleges have teams that compete to build and race solar powered cars.
